General Description
    ABF Freight System Inc., an acknowledged leader in Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) transportation since 1923, has the following Packaging Engineering Internship opportunity. This internship position will be located at the ABF Freight Distribution Hub located in North Little Rock, Arkansas, at the ABF Terminal located in Portland, Oregon, or at the ABF Terminal located in Oakland, California. The student will be under the direct supervision of either; a Sr. Mgr. / Mgr. of Packaging Engineering & Material Handling or a Senior Packaging Engineer.
    This department supports packaging requirements, development and consulting initiatives for the entire coporation -- internal dpartments and external customers.
    The student intern will be exposed to a broad scope of projects and experiences, including:
  • Design packaging for a board range of products for ABF's customers
  • Developing creative packaging and material handling solutions to reduce transit damage.
  • Actively participate as an integral part of a fast-moving packaging engineering team.
  • Travel to customer facilities, reviewing their existing packaging and investigating causes of distribution damages.
  • Extensive use of SolidWorks CAD
  • Gain first-hand experience of the practices and conditions within the LTL distribution environment.
  • Apply the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) packaging requirements.
  • Writing reports and recommendation for ABF Customers.
  • Managing multiple projects with critical timelines.
    The ideal candidate is/has:
  • Currently enrolled in a Packaging Engineering program at a recognized university.
  • Has completed at least one-half of their junior year.
  • Is preferred to have a 3.0 or higher GPA (on a 4.0 point scale).
  • Organized, self-directed and ability to operate independently.
  • Ability to travel throughout North America as needed (passport is a plus).
  • Very strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Presents professional image to others.
  • Exposure to and basic proficiency in software packages, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.), AutoCAD and/or Solid Works, Cape/Tops.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Must be enrolled in PKG 493 during their internship (unless a graduate student).
Location
  • Three Location Choices: Little Rock, Arkansas - or - Portland, Oregon - or - Oakland, California (Student's Choice).

Duration
    Six Months (actual start and end dates are per mutual agreement).

  • Salary - above average.
  • Round-trip relocation fully paid.
  • Housing will be the responsibility of the student, but the company will assist in finding appropriate housing.
  • Two weeks of temporary housing provided.
  • Candidate must be able to pass drug testing, physical and a background check.
